ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub music, dancehall, reggae fusion and
related styles. Jamaica's music culture is a fusion of elements from
the United States (rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul), Africa and
neighboring Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago (calypso and
soca).The Jamaican recording industry started in the 1950's with the
style
called Mento and singers such as Count Lasher, Lord Composer and George
Moxey were the artist of the day making this genre of music. Generally
called Reggae. Reggae's
popularity started in the 60's when some classic tracks caught
the imagination of the record buying public especialy in the UK.
Singers such as Laurel Aitken,Millie Small,Jackie Edwards(writer of
million seller keep on running} Owen Grey, Prince Buster,Jimmy
Cliff,Desmond Dekker,Toots and The Maytals,Johnny Nash, were the
forerunners of the music and then the Legendary Bob Marley
and the Wailers took the music to the world. Jamaican music's influence
on music styles in other countries includes the practice of toasting,
which was brought to New York City and evolved into rapping, For years,
and still today, Jamaican Music, such as slangs and beats has been
copied into other cultures because of the originality and creativity
within the islands vibe. British genres as Lovers rock and jungle music
are also influenced by Jamaican music.
